BY Economictimes • PUBLISHED 3rd July, 2020

Covid 19 and the subsequent lockdowns have had a significant impact on the economy and employment. Economic activity has shrunk and employees across sectors have faced layoffs and salary cuts. Even as people get used to living with the virus with all precautions in place, a big concern has been to re-start economic activity and get jobs back. In an e-mail interview Tarun Sinha, head of OLX People (horizontal business unit of OLX India) discusses the impact of the pandemic on jobs, outlook for Q2 of fiscal 2020-21, sectors which are hiring, impact of technology on informal sector employment and other issues around jobs.

What were the key findings of the survey that OLX conducted with employers earlier in June?
One of the key findings from the survey is that 85 percent of employers surveyed said there may be an increase in the recruitment of blue-collar and entry level staff ahead of the festive season this year. The top sectors to lead the spur in demand for hiring of blue-collar and entry level workers will be e-commerce and ITeS. Here are some of the key findings from the survey:

  • More than 50% of organisations expect recovery of business within three months while e-commerce and logistics were the fastest to resume operations since lockdown
  • Job security and health benefits will trump salary as a key determinant for accepting a job in the post-Covid era
  • More than 50 percent employers are considering including health and social security benefits for blue-collar and entry-level workers
  • While 63 percent of employers expect mild shortage of workers when demand surges, they do not expect blue collar workers to be more expensive than before
  • 100% of e-commerce and IT firms expect to fully resume operations before October 2020
